Peckleton's Natural Phenomenon

If you travel down Church Road picking up the field road to Earl Shilton, as you reach the entrance to Green Lane, you cross the fence into meadow land, immediately in front of you stands an old tree.

Look closely and you will see that it is two trees in one, for out of the one trunk has sprung not only an oak tree but also an ash.

This natural phenomenon known as the Oak and Ash has been referred to by locals for over a hundred years.

It is also the point where two footpaths merge, one starts at the bottom of Peckleton hill along Manor Road and the other begins at the top of the hill along Church Road.
In the 1920's when it was normal for residents to walk to work at Earl Shilton, they would meet up at the oak and ash, it is said and firmly believed by many that if you kiss under the Oak and Ash you will remain forever.

Radio, or wireless as it was called, was the main source of entertainment with programmes such as Dick Barton, Special Agent, every weekday night being a favourite of the kids.

1947 also saw changes at the Brown Horse Pub, until then the pub had always been purely an ale house. The changes resulted with the landlord Sid Brent successful application for a spirit license, this immediately altered the direction of the pub by taking it a little up market enabling it to thrive and when they also introduced music at weekends, it became one of the best known in the district, remaining so well into the 1970's.

A special time was always at Christmas when Sid and his wife organised the Children's Christmas Party, ensuring every child received a present.
